Ynez Johnston, American

Born 1920, Berkley, California.
Studied painting and print making at the University of California.
In Johnston’s work, there exists a cohesive blend of contemporary, vernacular, and ancient art, and these works reference the fantastical environs of Lafcadio’s “open mind.” Journeys with her late husband (novelist/poet John Berry) to Greece, Italy, India, Africa, Japan, and Mexico perpetuated her interest in exoticism and a mythical world, and this penchant for the foreign or otherworldly is embodied in the work she created for the Matsue Castle.
Her works can be found in many important public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Museum Of Modern Art, New York, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California. She has been featured in many solo exhibitions, including Mitsukoshi Gallery in Tokyo, Japan in 1976 and in 1978 at Ericson Gallery in Manhattan, New York.
