Foreword
Lafcadio Hearn was born to Rosa A. Kasimati and Charles B. Hearn in the island of Lafkada, Greece in 1850. An international author, he traveled to the four corners of the earth, before eventually reaching Japan and settling there.
Matsue is one of the cities Lafcadio loved most, hence his adoption of the name Koizumi Yakumo.
This year the City of Matsue is commemorating the 160th anniversary of his birth and the 120th anniversary of his arrival in Japan.
On this special occasion, an International Art Exhibition, rendering “Yakumo’s world and spirituality” will be held in Matsue Castle, and in the Koizumi Yakumo Memorial Museum, Matsue, Japan.
Greek and Irish in origin, raised internationally, Lafcadio - Yakumo viewed Japan from an individual humanist perspective, his fascination evolving into admiration.
The Lafcadio Hearn Art Exhibition was held at the American College of Greece in Athens last October. The featured works of 47 artists from seven countries, inspired artists and visitors alike.
In appreciation and understanding of Lafcadio’s open mind, free from any prejudice for race or religion, we are celebrating Yakumo’s world through art.
