Born 1920, Berkley, California.
\nStudied painting and print making at the University of California.
\nIn Johnston\u2019s work, there exists a cohesive blend of contemporary, vernacular, and ancient art, and these works reference the fantastical environs of Lafcadio\u2019s \u201copen mind.\u201d Journeys with her late husband (novelist\/poet John Berry) to Greece, Italy, India, Africa, Japan, and Mexico perpetuated her interest in exoticism and a mythical world, and this penchant for the foreign or otherworldly is embodied in the work she created for the Matsue Castle.
\nHer works can be found in many important public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Museum Of Modern Art, New York, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California.
